The piece in context

History

Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon was the first English Yu-Gi-Oh! set, released in March 2002. Blue-Eyes takes the opening slot at LOB-001, and the 1st Edition printing was produced before anyone knew how large the game would become.

Why it matters

It is Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Charizard: the card that represents the franchise to collectors and non-collectors alike, occupying the position every serious cabinet is built toward.

Population

Early Yu-Gi-Oh! production quality was poor by modern standards — off-centre cuts, print lines and edge chipping are the norm. Gem Mint 1st Edition LOB-001 examples number in the low double digits, and the population has moved barely at all in recent years.

Market

Public results for PSA 10 1st Edition Blue-Eyes have climbed into the high five and low six figures, with each appearance closely watched. This is a card that trades on scarcity of opportunity as much as scarcity of supply.
